Structured Data (Author/Updated) Errors In Google Webmaster Tools

Structured data can be forgotten or neglected when creating and running your blog. You don’t even receive any serious messages sbout it through Google Webmaster Tools, but you should not ignore this.

The most common error messages of structured data are:

  • Missing: updated
  • Missing: author

And you see this as well:

“This property is missing in the html markup or was not properly highlighted in the structured data markup helper. This may prevent the rich snippet from appearing.”

How to update author and updated microformats in Structured Data for WordPress?

The easiest way to put updated microformat is to include the article’s creation date in a <span> tag.

Solution 1 for missing updated microformat in structured data:

<span class=”entry-date”><span class=”icon-clock-4 entry-icon”></span><span class=”date updated”><?php echo get_the_date(); ?></span></span>

Solution 2 for missing updated microformat in structured data:

<span class=”entry-date updated”><?php echo get_the_date(); ?></span>

I know it requires some html knowledge. Usually you can find the “entry-date” in the single.php file.

The “author” is easy as well:

Solution 1 for missing author microformat in structured data:

Just paste the following to your footer or sidebar:

<span class=”vcard author”><span class=”fn”>by <a href=”” rel=”author”>YOURNAME</a></span></span>

Solution 2 for missing author microformat in structured data:

Search the author id in single.php file and modify it like:

<span class=”vcard author”><span class=”fn”><?php _e(‘by:’, kopa_get_domain()); ?> <a href=”<?php echo get_author_posts_url(get_the_author_meta(‘ID’)); ?>”><?php the_author_meta(‘nickname’); ?></a></span></span>

If you can’t find the single.php file in the theme directory, then probably your theme is a premium one. You should contact the support, because it should be covered in the support offered by the creator.

I don’t know how much this effects your seo score. Theoretically it should boost it because it gives better view to the Google search engine bot.

Do you use microformats? Do you use only author and updated, or some others as well?
